Designed to give your inner child a celebration to remember

For my birthday this year, I threw a dinner party aimed at bringing out everyone’s inner child—and honestly, it might be my favorite theme yet. The concept? Nostalgia. I wanted to create a space that sparked core memories, made people laugh, and let us indulge in the foods, outfits, and games that defined our childhoods. A party that let’s us leave our adult responsibilities at the door for the night, yes please.
THE INVITATION
I asked each guest to bring a childhood dish that brought them joy. No pressure, no Pinterest-perfect expectations, just pure comfort and fun. And to top it off, the optional dress code was to recreate your favorite childhood outfit or photo. The results? Hilarious, heartwarming, and very well-documented.
THE SET UP
We set the table in the garden, dressed in butcher paper (a nod to Macaroni Grill dinners where doodling was encouraged), surrounded by fresh flowers and breadstick sculptures shaped like bows and blooms.
Crayons were scattered across the table for dinner-time drawing—think tic-tac-toe, portraits of each other, and spontaneous scribbles. Rainbow paper chains hung from the trellis overhead, creating a colorful chandelier effect that gave the whole night an extra dose of whimsy.

THE FOOD
The best part about this theme? Anything goes. There’s no pressure to go all out with a dish to impress- anything you bring is guaranteed to get a smile as you share your favorite childhood stories behind the dishes or reminisce on snacks we all grew up enjoying.

Some of our highlights:
Dinosaur nuggets (of course)
Giant shell mac and cheese (remember how everything looked huge growing up? Well we used jumbo pasta shells - meant for stuffing - in a classic velveeta/kraft styled mac n cheese)
Gourmet wagyu fried rice (a grown-up twist on a childhood staple)
Sloppy Joes
And for dessert: my Dubai chocolate-inspired cake—a rich chocolate cake layered with pistachio frosting, crunchy shredded wheat cereal (for that signature crunch- I couldn’t find shredded filo but this worked great), and a toasted meringue shell. (Recipe linked [here]!)
DRINKS!
We served classic childhood favorites—Capri Suns, Fanta sodas, and our elevated take on strawberry milk: the Pink Russian (a White Russian with strawberry cream instead of regular milk). Sweet, silly, and just the right amount of boozy nostalgia.
Other suggestions:
Dirty Shirley Temples
Roy Rogers (glorified cherry coke with a twist!)
Hard Lemonade
Root beer floats
THE VIBE
To round out the evening:
We popped in a VHS copy of The Parent Trap
Set the mood with a throwback Y2K playlist
Played games like Twister, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and Monikers (our favorite updated version of charades)
What I would add next time:
Document with a vintage camcorder or disposable film cameras that can be passed around from guest to guest! A little bit pricey but a very cool way to capture this event- or any event, really!
Sunday bar - make sure to include all the fixings! M&Ms, sprinkles, cookie crumbles, hot fudge, maraschino cherries, pretzels!
Temporary Tattoos! One of my friends brought hair tinsel for everyone, which was so fun!
Pillow fort for movie night

Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a dinner party idea that’s both low-pressure and high-reward, nostalgia is the move. There’s something magical about sharing old stories, comfort food, and the goofy parts of our younger selves. It's a theme that doesn’t just entertain, it connects.
And that’s what the best dinner parties are all about.
